Rockdale County is a fast growing and dynamic suburban community located 24 miles east of Atlanta on Interstate 20. It is about 130 square miles in size - the second smallest of Georgia's 159 counties - and has a population estimated by the Atlanta Regional Commission at 72,900. The State of Georgia's Office of Planning and Budget projects a 2010 population of 100,243 for Rockdale.
Rockdale has one municipality, the City of Conyers, which is centrally located and has a population of 7,500.
Rockdale County has the type of "family-friendly" community that is appealing to parents who want a safe,
wholesome and progressive environment in which to raise their children. It features a County government that is committed to protecting and enhancing quality of life through long-range planning and responsible, fiscally conservative stewardship of the community's resources. Rockdale County also has an excellent school system, an abundance of recreational opportunities, and a number of points of interests that are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. These include Panola Mountain State Conservation Park, located on a granite mountain in south Rockdale, the Smyrna Campground, where old fashion camp meetings have been held since before the Civil War, and Randy Poynter Reservoir, a County-owned 650-acres water supply and recreation lake in the northern part of the County. It also is home to the city of Conyers' Georgia International Horse Park, site of the 1996 Olympic Equestrian events.
The Department of Parks and Recreation provides recreational facilities and programs for the citizens of Rockdale County. The department operates an outdoor and indoor swimming pool and outdoor parks with playgrounds, a 650-acre lake for boating and fishing, trails, recreation center and ball fields as well as providing recreational programming.
The Department offers many recreational activities for citizens of all ages and with varied interests, such as: basketball, gymnastics, aquatic classes, exercise classes, adult softball, tennis, youth basketball, swimming, and additional various programs. Also, the Johnson Park Recreation Center offers after school care and a day camp in the summer.
Additionally, the department offers the rental of facilities, meeting rooms, pavilions, ball fields and gyms. Also, the department offers open space in the form of trails, playgrounds, and green fields.
